The Besom in Woking

Besom Logo and NameThe Besom in Woking forms a bridge between the churches in Woking and the local community. We take what people want to give: their time or money, skills or things, and we find someone in need, referred to us by Social Services or other social charities, who would love to receive those things.

To contact the Woking Besom e-mail info@thebesominwoking.org.uk or phone and leave a message on 01276 855215.

Giving Time:

Individually - Come out on the van with us for collections and deliveries and see how Besom works. Or help sort the bags of clothes etc. ready for sending out. Our van days are Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturday mornings.

As a group - Decorating, cleaning or gardening - just tell us what you would like to do, how many you are, and we will arrange a project for you.

Giving things: You can give anything, things from sofas to beds, kettles to cutlery sets, clothes to vacuum cleaners to carpets, and a whole lot more! We can collect from your home. We only accept things that are in good or excellent condition, because we want to give the very best to those who have no choice.

Giving skills: Are you a carpenter, an electrician, a decorator, a carpet fitter or just a dab hand at DIY? We'd love to use whatever you have to offer.

Praying for The Besom in Woking: The Besom depends entirely on God's provision, prayer is at the heart of all we do. If you offer to pray for us regularly, we will provide you with regular prayer bulletins.

If you would like to help the Besom in Woking in any of these ways please let us know by completing this form.

Street Angels

Street AngelsChurches across Woking are working together to set up Woking Street Angels to provide care for people in the town centre as pubs and clubs close. Street Angels or similar programmes have been springing up across the UK over the last 6 years.  Street Angels are adult volunteers (over 18s), usually from local churches, who care and provide practical support for the people, usually on Friday and/or Saturday nights, who use the night clubs and other leisure and entertainment venues in town centres.  Their calming presence on the streets late at night makes a really positive impact on crime and antisocial behaviour in town centres and they make a real difference to many people, very often young people who have had too much to drink.

Outside Light

Outside LightOutside Light is now a part of the highly regarded registered Christian charity,
The Matrix Trust
. We're here to make a difference to those who are hurting and struggling. We're volunteers made up from different denominations of the Christian church around Woking, all with a passion to see lives transformed through the love of Jesus Christ. We are fully inclusive and share that love with those who are outside of our church walls, with those of all backgrounds and ages, and those of all faiths and none.

Across

Across LogoThe vision of the Across Project is reflected in the key aims and objectives, which are:

  1. To help build bridges of friendship and understanding to our local Asian communities.
  2. To help local Christians to appreciate and understand the lifestyles, cultures and faiths of those from other ethnic backgrounds.
  3. To train and organise volunteers in a wide range of outreach and serving activities.
  4. To share the love of God in both word and deed with those from a different culture and help others to do the same.
  5. To see people from all backgrounds become disciples of Jesus Christ and part of His Body, the Church.

York Road Project

York Road ProjectThe York Road Project provides night shelter for the homeless. It is housed in our parish on the corner of York Road.

In addition for volunteering at the shelter, there is an increased need for volunteers during the winter months. When the night time temperature drops below freezing, there is increased demand placed upon the shelter. Together, churches in Woking support Winter Watch which coordinates these volunteers.

Schools Christian Action Team

SCAT LogoSCAT are here in Woking, working with schools, primary and secondary, at their invitation and offering a Christian support framework to teachers and pupils. They are a Team of people from several different, local churches most of whom are volunteers but also including professional schools workers.

YPOD

YPOD YMCA Woking LogoWoking YMCA is part of a world-wide movement which is committed to helping young people, particularly at times of need, regardless of gender, race, ability or faith.  YPOD, situated at the YMCA in Chobham Road, is a practical outworking of the vision of the YMCA, It is a place where young people can meet informally and access information.  It has a cafe, internet suite and recording studio, freely available to anyone, and several support groups and counselling on offer, as well as regular gig nights.

Recently Woking Y, in partnership with York Road Housing Project, opened a housing association, which has 12 beds specifically allocated to young people.  Instead of being given bed and breakfast accommodation, sometimes as far away as Staines, youngsters can now stay in Woking and take advantage of the support available at the Y to help them become independent.  There are various opportunities for volunteering and helping to support this venture.

Prison Visiting

HM Prison Service There is a real need for Christian prison visitors at both Send (Women's) and Coldingley (Men's) prisons in the Woking area. Your support can make a very real difference to the prisoners both now and for their future. "It's the interest you show. I don't know if you understand, but I feel now as though somebody cares. Maybe if someone had shown this interest a few years ago I wouldn't be here now; who knows where I might have been? Do you think its too late for me to get a life?"

This work is particularly important at Send, because there are so few Women's prisons, the people there are much further away from their friends and families, and so without visitors can feel much more isolated.
