Discipleship

While there are many great books to help you with your discipleship, perhaps the most significant help on your journey of faith could be a Spiritual Director. If you are seeking a Spiritual Director, talk to the Guildford Coordinator today.

Gospel Shaped Discipleship - LICC: A set of six free seminars by Antony Billington with power-points, handouts and MP3 sound files available to download. Titles are: Begining with the Gospel; Engaging with the Word; Belonging to the Church; Walking with the Lord; Living in the world; and Standing in God's grace.

Foundations21 - BRF (Bible Reading Fellowship): This content rich web-site provides a self-pace or group based discipleship resource. It contains many learning paths covering four levels of faith development presented in four different learning styles. It also provides daily reading notes, quotes and psalms. After an initial sign-up, profiling and introduction to the tool, you follow your own path through this amazing resource.

The Anatomy of Peace - The Arbinger Institute: We are called to be peace-makers by the Prince of Peace. This book, although not explicitly Christian, embodies Christian values. It presents a thoroughly researched analysis of how peace is broken as opposing sides collude in creating conflict; and how peace might be restored through intentional choice.

The Radical Disciple – John Stott: According to John Stott, his last book. This work brings together his insights from over 60 years of ministry and adult discipleship; and distils them down into a small number of very pithy characteristics of a deeply rooted disciple.

Keep in Step with the Spirit – Jim Packer: A densely packed and sometimes heavy tomb exploring Christian belief and life in the Spirit. This book is packed full of highly valuable rock-solid teaching on the Christian faith.

The Irresistible Revolution – Shane Claiborne: Controversial, challenging, inspiring – don’t expect anything “orthodox” about how Shane Claiborne views today’s church. It is a call back to radically simple living, and direct engagement with the marginalised in society. Evangelism through uncompromising love might just encapsulate the principles and practices of the ‘Simple Way’ http://www.thesimpleway.org/ movement.

Walk This Way – Stephen Holmes, Russell Rook: “New Wine-rs” might recognise this book from a couple of years back. Discipleship is about following in the footsteps of our Rabbi (Jesus) – learning from him to say what he would say and do what he would do. This book helps us understand our journey.

The Wild Man’s Journey – Richard Rohr: A wonderful guide to the development of male spirituality as one journeys through the stages of life. It is of particular value to those men moving into adulthood, and to those moving into retirement – two of life’s key transitions.

Growing Leaders – James Lawrence: In the book behind the course, James Lawrence  presents the essential qualities necessary for Christian Leadership. Although the books primary focus is the full-time minister, a very great deal of what is discussed is fundamental to our leadership of others as Christians in a secular world, and to our discipleship in general. This book is a great asset to anyone who is serious about their calling in Christ.

The Passionate Life – Mike Breen and Walt Kallestad: Using geometric shapes (Circle, Triangle etc) the authors help us explore many dimensions of healthy discipleship. This is a very accessible and practical guide to any who wish to get their life and faith back in balance.
