New Here?
What kind of church?
St Mary of Bethany is part of the Church of England, and a member of the Evangelical Alliance.
You'll find a wide range of styles of worship service here, so that you can engage with God in a style that you find most helpful. See our Services page for more information. The services, however, don't define the church - just as the building doesn't define the church either. The church is the community of people that meet together, and community is valued highly at St Mary's. You might like to read more about our ethos here.

Activities
Alongside the Sunday services are a variety of other contexts in which you can join and experience Christian community. Important among these are the various small groups that meet for teaching, prayer and encouragement: there are a number of house groups that meet midweek, as well as a women's group on Thursday, and youth cell groups. There's always something happening at St Mary's!
Some of the different activites for different groups of people:
- For pre-school children and parents: Bethany Babes
- For school-age children: Impact meets on most Sundays at 11am, with smaller age-related groups meeting afterwards. We also have Friday Night Club and Friday Xtreme groups.
- Youth: meet in cell groups and also together on most Sunday evenings at 'Re:'.
- For people of retirement-age and beyond, Cameo meets on alternate Thursdays.
- We also have a Mencap group that meets regularly in the church, plus strong connections with local Scouts and Guides.
What do we be
lieve?
That's a huge thing to try to convey in a web site! You could start with the church's mission statement, which is "seeking to be a community that loves Jesus and serves others in his name": so, the strong values are community, loving Jesus, and serving others. All these things stem from being a committed follower of Jesus – a Christian. If you want to know more about Christian belief, you could do a lot worse than start here: www.cofe.anglican.org/faith/christian/. You might also want to read our basis of faith.
However, as that web page (from the Church of England) states, the best way to find out about faith and prayer, and to raise questions, is to meet some Christians. This is because Christianity is about relationships and community, more than it is about a belief system. St Mary's is just one church where you can meet Christians and find out more from them.
